PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a hormonal disorder that is highly common to women especially those in childbearing age or stage. This hormonal disorder can affect a woman’s reproductive organ. This is known as the number one cause of infertility. Majority of women with PCOS are suffering from various symptoms like weight gain, fatigue, hair loss, excessive hair on the face and body, irregular menstrual cycle, skin disorder and sleep apnea.

Relieving some of these PCOS symptoms is possible with the right PCOS diet foods.

Carbohydrates

Not all carbohydrates are the same. Therefore, they will affect your insulin level differently. Carbohydrates are present in foods like bread, pasta, rice, cereal and potatoes. It is also present in majority of the snack foods like chips, cookies, and candy as well as in drinks like soda and juice. Carbohydrates with high amount of fiber are the ideal carbohydrates to it. This will lower your insulin level and keep your weight at its normal level.

Therefore, instead of indulging yourself with your delicious white bread or white rice, settle to a more healthy option like brown rice, whole grain bread and whole grain oatmeal.

Low Glycemic Index Foods

According to a Registered Dietician Martha McKittrick, even just a 5% of weight loss will help reduce PCOS related symptoms like irregular menstrual period. Foods with low glycemic index help reduce the fluctuation in blood glucose and insulin. It can also make people feeling full longer. Therefore, eating foods that have low Glycemic Index will help reduce the amount of insulin and thus will help people lose weight.

Foods low in GI include apples, apricots, asparagus, barley, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, cherries, majority of the fruit juices, grapefruit, green beans, lettuce, low-fat ice cream, milk, whole and multi-grain bread, regular and whole wheat pasta, peaches, pears, plums, tomatoes, and yogurt.

What Causes PCOS?

Posted in PCOS on January 28th, 2012 by admin – Be the first to comment

PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a health disorder, affecting women. It has been known that one out of ten and one out of twenty childbearing age women has PCOS. What causes PCOS is generally unknown. However, it is believed that imbalance of the endocrine system can be one of the factors.

Hypothalamic Pituitary Ovarian Axis – while it is not certain what causes PCOS, Hypothalamic Pituitary Ovarian Axis (HPO) can be one of the causes of PCOS. As the pituitary produces Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH), it encourages the production of androgens because LH will travel to the ovary that causes the production of androgens.  Many have said that a persistent high level of LH and androgens like testosterone will cause PCOS. However, because many of the PCOS affected women do not have high level of LH, this seems to be untrue.

Insulin-Androgen Connection – many believed that insulin is another cause of PCOS. Aside from its ability to regulate glucose levels, insulin also helps the liver in producing the sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG). If the said molecule (SHBG) is present, it will carry the Testosterone in the blood. If there is a decrease in the production of SHBG, an increased amount of free Testosterone will be present in the blood. These Testosterones are those that are not carried by SHBG. In addition, many people believed that a high level of insulin could cause PCOS because it will let the ovary produce an increased amount of androgens. Once again, this observation does not explain PCOS with those women with PCOS who have no insulin resistance.
